Life is much better with good wine. Add some real friendship to the mix, and you’ve got yourself a fabulous Saturday night. Wouldn’t you agree?
What if you could enjoy all the benefits of a girl’s wine night without the next-day consequences?
We’re not referring to that embarrassing text message (sorry girl, you’re on your own for that one š). We’re talkin’ about the next day headache, fatigue, and anxiety from “going off your diet.”
Fortunately, we’ve found a natural wine company that produces all-natural, organic, sugar-free wine that leaves you feeling great the next morning. #winning
What is Natural Wine?
Good question! But to answer it, we must also talk about conventional wines. So, letās review a few of the main factors that define natural wine brands, and talk about what natural wine does NOT include.

Natural Wine Doesnāt Include Pesticides
During the growing season, most conventional vineyards in America spray weed killers to destroy weeds under the vineyards. The most common one is called glyphosate (also known as Roundup). Glyphosate is highly controversial! The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) declares it is safe below 1.75 milligrams per kilogram of body weight per day. Yet, many other countries have either banned or strictly limited its use (1). Ultimately, there are some concerning studies about glyphosate negatively affecting our health (2-4). As a result, The Environmental Working Group recommends less than 0.01 milligrams – Ā much lower than the EPA. Read more about glyphosate here.
Natural wine companies do not utilize glyphosate in their vineyards. But unfortunately, choosing organic is not enough. Even organic wines on the market may contain glyphosate residues due to soil runoff, rain, and wind from neighboring non-organic vineyards. Dry Farm Wines takes it one step further and sources all of their wines internationally from natural wine regions to avoid the accidental pesticide exposure that is common here in the U.S. What this means: no glyphosate residue in your natural wine!
There is Nothing Else Added (No Additives)
Did you know that U.S. wine producers can use 76 different additives in wine (5)?! We sure didnāt! And hereās what’s even crazier: these conventional wineries do not have to tell us which additives are included!
Unlike food labels, there is no government regulation (yet) that forces winemakers to include a label to disclose ingredients in their wines. So basically, we could be drinking artificial coloring, defoaming agents, high fructose corn syrup, or ammonia when we drink our Friday night glass āo red. Yummy. NOT!
A natural wine company won’t add anything extra to the wine. As Dry Farm Wines likes to say, they āvalue wine guided by the diversity of nature.ā Canāt get any smarter than Mother Nature, right?
Lower Sugar/Carbohydrate Content
Besides the fact that conventional winemakers can add sugar to the finished product, many also have a higher sugar content because of how they are fermented.
Letās travel back to Chemistry 101 for a second (donāt worry, itāll be painless). Fermentation is a natural reaction that occurs when sugar interacts with yeast. It creates alcohol as a byproduct, which continues to ferment until all the sugar is gone. Not as cool as our big man J.C. did it back in the biblical era, but you get the point!
Most conventional wines are bottled before they finish fermenting – because, well, moā time saved=moā money (for them). Natural wine brands, however, allow wines to ferment at their natural pace. As a result, more sugar is fermented, leaving LESS sugar in the actual finished product itself.
This means fewer hangovers the next morning. Wait, did you catch that? Dry Farm Wines actually promises that their wine is HANGOVER-FREE. Um, where can we sign up?
It also means that natural wines are a great choice for someone following a Paleo or Ketogenic (read: low sugar) lifestyle. Therefore, it’s only natural that the 131 MethodĀ stands behind Dry Farm Wine for this main reason.
Lower Alcohol Content
Surprisingly, commercial wine brands have slowly increased their alcohol content over the years. The average wine contains about 14% alcohol, while natural wines, like Dry Farm Wines, contain 12.5% alcohol (at the very most).
Now, before you dismiss this as a downside, remember this: girl, you ain’t 21 no more! Well, maybe thereās a few of you. But, if youāre reading about natural wines, you are obviously more mature than most of us were at that age!
Lower alcohol content in natural wine is a benefit because alcohol may cover up some of the subtle flavor varieties in the wine itself. Wine also has a number of healthful components to it! For example, many people are aware that red wine is high in a polyphenol called resveratrol. Research shows this compound may improve heart health by lowering blood pressure, raising the āgoodā cholesterol, and reducing plaque build-up in the arteries (6-8). Resveratrol in wine is also anti-inflammatory. It can lower levels of inflammation in the blood, which is beneficial for everyone, especially since too much inflammation causes unwanted symptoms, and even disease (9, 10).
Essentially, the healthy components of wine are not likely related to the alcohol itself. Therefore, we can enjoy a couple of glasses of natural wine with dinner while obtaining the health benefits, but not overdoing the alcohol.
Where Can I Buy Natural Wine?
We’re gonna be real with you. Finding a reputable, natural wine brand is not that easy. Because there are no regulations about wine labeling, you really have to put trust in the companies. Plus, even if a natural wine company means well, they may still have accidental pesticide exposure (as we mentioned above). Remember, just because a wine is organic doesn’t mean they won’t still add other things to the wine. (Organic sugar is still just sugar to your body)!
There may be some smaller, specialty liquor stores near you that sell a few natural wines. But, let’s be honest. We live in the Amazon era! We have super busy lives, and we can’t spend a bunch of time researching, shopping, and inquiring about natural wine brands.
