What Is The Blood Type Diet
The blood type diet is not a ‘diet’ in the sense of the word, but more of a lifestyle program. Specific foods, exercise and ways to handle stress is recommended for each of the four blood types. Dr Peter J. D’Adamo created a method of individualizing diet to your blood type. Dr D’Adamo wrote his famous, bestselling book Eat Right For Your Type in 1996. He postulated that blood type O developed in response to the meat diet of the hunter-gather before the cultivation of grains began. People with blood type O, like their meat-eating ancestors, have a high level of stomach acids required for breaking down meat.
Type O need meat and small quantities of carbohydrates for optimal wellness. Dr D’Adamo also suggests that O’s may have a tendency toward an under-active thyroid and need vigorous exercise for vitality and managing stress.
Blood type A, according to D’Adamo, represents an adaption to the cultivation of grains. Type A’s need grains and light exercise. Blood type B, D’Adamo states, evolved as a result of the migration of tribes to colder climates. It would also seem to represent an adaptation to dairy products and could explain why so many Asian Indians, with their long history of drinking cow’s milk, have blood type B.

Many people find the Blood Type Diet helps with weight loss, lowering inflammation, and improving gut health. Currently, there is no evidence showing us that certain blood types have specific nutritional needs. D’Adamo suggests that knowing your blood type is an essential tool for understanding how your body reacts to foods and your susceptibility to particular disease. Blood type O seems to have a lower risk of heart disease. Type A has a higher risk of microbial infections. Blood type AB and B have a higher risk of pancreatic cancer. There is a study linking the blood type diet with favorable effects on some cardiometabolic risk factors. Type A seems to have higher levels of cortisol and produce more cortisol in a stressful situation. Blood type O, on the other hand, seems to overproduce adrenaline. These type of practices seem to be stressful for people with blood type A. Blood type A’s excel with individual sports, yoga, walking and other activities which calm and centre them. Depending on your blood type you will have different gut bacteria. Gut bacteria, otherwise known as your gut microbiome, breaks down different food groups in different ways. Blood type O doesn’t have the microbiome to break down carbohydrates. Therefore carbohydrates eaten by people with blood type O seem to store carbs as fat. Blood type A has a gut microbiome which can digest carbohydrates well.
Asthma, hay fever and allergies are more prevalent in blood type O. Type B’s seem to suffer more from autoimmune diseases such as chronic fatigue, lupus and multiple sclerosis. Avoiding food allergies is essential for blood type B. Cancer, anaemia and heart disease are higher in blood type AB.

Low carbohydrate and high protein is the essence of your diet if you have a blood type O. Meat, and fish are all on the menu for blood type O. Limit carbohydrates, sugar, grains, fruit, nuts, legumes and beans. You will thrive on running, cycling and team sports.
Blood Type Diet A
Blood type A’s thrive on heaps of vegetables, fruits, gluten-free grains and soy proteins. These foods tend to help A’s lose weight, increase energy, improve your immune system and protect you from health conditions. Avoid eating meat and dairy most of the time, if not all of the time. Extra virgin olive oil, organic coconut oil and other nuts and seeds are the healthy fats for A’s. Avoid foods which contain gluten such as wheat flour, barley and rye.
