How her major food sensitivities were discovered, leading to a 20 pound loss

Sheena M. went through the 131 Method program hoping for the best, but what she got a was diagnosis no one in Western medicine had been able to diagnose. Suffering from longtime stomach pains, and weight-loss resistance, she was eager to unlock the mystery plaguing her. From her very first lessons, she discovered she needed to become her own detective. The 131 Method doesn’t believe in one-size-fits all meal plans. People are different! Part of the journey is experimenting in what works best for YOUR body. Kale might be great for your sister, but devastating to you and your gut microbiome.

Sleuthing out these food sensitivities leads to weight loss for many people. “I LOVED that this wasn’t just a list of do’s & don’ts but a genuine test to see what OUR bodies NEEDED! For example, one of the best things recommended to add to meals for healthy fats were avocados. Turns out I have a huge problem with them, which led me to do more testing. That brought me to realize that I have a polyol FODMAP sensitivity. I had abdominal pain for a long time with no answers from doctors. After going through this testing, I found that polyols and dairy are not my friends.” Just that information alone, and relief from pain, would’ve been enough to have Sheena shouting from the rooftops, but she gained oh so much more!

Prepping (for the Kids)

Sheena now preps meals in advance so she’s not tempted by things she’ll later regret. She drinks more water and her sleeping habits improved. She dove deeper than even the provided lessons and bought a book on sleep, realizing its importance after finishing all her lessons. “I just take more time for self-care. My kids watch me and pick up on my habits. I don’t want them to inherit my struggles.” She’s also proud that she kicked her “sugar-hyped” coffee in the mornings, something she says she previously, “could not function without.” She’s now able to go much longer between meals, and feels so much better, as a result.

Breakthrough

Sheena says she had an epiphany during the “Emotional Eating” lesson with Dr. Sarno. She’d never considered herself an emotional eater. But things became crystal clear to her after her this particular deep dive lesson. “Before I was aware, emotional eating had been my biggest obstacle. Through identifying the problem and going through steps to fix it, I have overcome my desire for late night munchies and wanting to binge on something sweet or salty while I watch TV.” 

A Little Help from Friends

When asked what helped her get through the difficult moments, Sheena says, “old photos of me when I was bigger, plus good friends willing to literally slap a bad food choice out of my hands.” Many of her co-workers and family members watched her shed weight before their eyes. One day, about to take a bite of a granola bar during her fast because she was so hungry, a co-worker slapped it right into the trash because she knew how hard Sheena had been working. She says it’s refreshing to finally make good food choices because she wants to, not because she feels like she’s on a diet. Knowing that the foods she used to succumb to at work were the cause of her intense stomach pains is all the incentive she needs to pass on the pizza and junk food brought into her office. 

Sheena says she has maintained her weight-loss, even when she’s had moments of stress that caused her to choose old habits over new ones. Knowing she’s armed with the tools for success, and that she can go back to lessons any time she needs a pick-me-up, gives her confidence that her journey is just beginning.
