We hear it all the time, but what does it really mean? What’s wrong with the one you currently have? Perhaps nothing. But, the mindset you currently have may be keeping you from what you want. Basically, it is a script of rules from which we unconsciously take direction. The power of positive messaging is simply rewriting that script, and therefore, your actions change.
Beliefs and Expectations
Scripts dictate what we do, how we act, what we wear and how we react. Scripts are embedded in us in various stages in our loves. They allow our success based on our expectations and history. But, they also limit us sometimes. For example, a diet mindset comes with rules, and also feelings of failure. Scripts follow those rules. We toggle our behaviors based on those scripts (and it’s often automatic).
Changing the script changes the mindset. We can change our outcome, but only after acknowledging the script. Otherwise, it’s a set, or a fixed, mindset. Try this activity…
Make two Columns
On the left- write down all the great feelings you have after a positive growth seminar. Like a Tony Robbins type event. What do you feel? Write down all the powerful positive messaging. List all the things that tell you, “YES YOU CAN.”
On the right- write the script that goes with dieting. “I am not capable. This is too hard. I never succeed.”
Compare the two. The brain loves patterns. So follow the thought patterns that reinforce the good. If an outdated script limits you, it’s time to rewrite it. For example, if your script says, “I can’t swim,” then you won’t. But the mind is adaptable. Changing that script and creating that positive messaging, rewrites the old habit.
With regard to dieting, only focus on the days things worked. Remember what you did to begin. What worked the first time? Repeat that experience. Let the days that didn’t work fall away. But rewrite the pattern on the days things worked well.
