While we always recommend safe, low carb and smart drinking (or none at all), sometimes a hangover happens. If you wake up ‘hangry,’ tired and craving pancakes drenched in syrup, pause before hitting that diner! Sugar and carbs first thing in the morning often lead to a day of craving pizza and donuts. Instead of feeding the cravings, fuel yourself with nutrients and macros your body needs to truly feel better. The best hangover breakfast meals energize you with protein and healthy carbs with some fiber. You also need hydration and electrolytes! A breakfast rich in these nutrients keeps you full with balanced blood sugar, which tames the cravings and helps you regain your sharpness. Essentially, a good hangover breakfast helps to calm your stomach and kick start your day with sustained energy, not a heavy meal that has you crawling back into bed.
The Best Hangover Breakfast Meals
Bacon, Cheese and Egg Sandwich
A bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich is an excellent breakfast for the morning after a few too many. It’s also pretty easy to make if you’re a little out of it. You need two eggs, butter, bacon, and cheese (choose a vegan cheese if you do not tolerate dairy). Feel free to add a paleo ketchup and hot sauce for serving.
Cook bacon for about 15-20 minutes in a 400 degree oven. Choose the type of bread you want. If possible, keep it low carb. (We have lots of 131 bread options). Fry the eggs in a little butter, ghee of oil and place them on top of the toasted bread. Top with cheese and bacon.
Eggs contain Cysteine and Taurine amino acids, which are great in fighting a hangover. Cysteine breaks down a waste of alcohol metabolism known as acetaldehyde. On the other hand, Taurine flushes out alcohol toxins, hence, reversing the effects of alcohol damage.
Potato and Bacon Casserole
One of the best breakfasts for a slow and head-spinning morning is a potato and bacon scramble. The ingredients include egg, bacon, shredded potato and seasonings. This breakfast contains a high level of starchy carbohydrates to provide you with that hash-brown comfort feeling people craving without the grease. The breakfast also contains proteins, minerals, and other nutrients to revitalize your body if you wake up with an awful hangover.
Chop the bacon and cook in a skillet. Remove from pan leaving a tiny bit of bacon grease. Shred the potato and add to the pan and cook until tender. Crack in the eggs and scramble, adding seasoning and maybe even some onions or spinach. Add the bacon, stir to combine and serve.
Omelet with Spinach and Tomatoes
Omelets are a great breakfast, especially with cheese. However, note that lactose can be irritating to the stomach for some people, so grab a non-dairy version if you need to. Omelets go well with nutrient-rich veggies such as kale, spinach, and avocado. Spinach and other leafy greens contain high amounts of potassium, antioxidants, and vitamins.
Whisk up some eggs with a splash of non-dairy milk and salt and pepper. Pour into a pan and cook until the bottom sets. Sprinkle in spinach and chopped tomatoes (and any veggies you like) and continue cooking until almost cooked through. Flip or fold to cook through and serve.
Banana Oatmeal
A plateful of oatmeal will soothe your stomach and make your body warm. More importantly, it neutralizes toxins in vodkas and also boosts your body energy levels. This hangover breakfast is easy to prepare. We like hazelnuts or walnuts, banana, peanut butter (or PB2), oats, water or almond milk and flaxseed.
Simply cook oats in boiling water or milk and allow it to soften for about 5 minutes. Allow it to cool for two minutes after cooking. Add peanut butter, walnuts, flaxseed, and banana slices.
Alcohol causes you to lose a lot of fluids. Consequently, you also lose a lot of potassium and electrolytes. Bananas contain high amounts of potassium. The meal itself contains more carbs than our egg options. So, feel free to cook up some egg whites and stir them in, or, treat this like a pre-workout meal and hit the gym after breakfast!
Side of Watermelon
Watermelon is full of hydrating power. It is also light on the stomach and contains natural sugar to energize you. But most importantly, it replenishes fluids. Serve with any of our egg dish suggestions. We love infused water combinations, and watermelon tops our list for that too. Check out some yummy fruit and herb combos here.
Fruit Smoothie
After a night of binge drinking, you wake up feeling drained and tired. Thanks to the invention of blenders, you can easily prepare a fruit smoothie on the go. Fresh juice will also come in handy. If you have a headache, a stomach upset, you will want to try a berry detox smoothie. You will need 1/2 frozen banana, handful of spinach, non-dairy milk, blueberries, blackberries and ice. Spinach does a great job of detoxifying the body, and the banana helps potassium. Simply put all the ingredients in a blender and blend until thick and creamy. We like to add a scoop or two of collagen protein powder too.
Avocado Toast with Egg
If you are not a cooking pro, then this hangover breakfast is your best choice. It is easy to cook, whether poached, scrambled, or even hard-boiled. Eggs are rich in protein and fat, which makes them ideal for breakfast. Eggs contain Cysteine, which makes you feel better after a night of drinking.
Make a 131 Method bread, or buy some sprouted grain bread. Toast. Smash avocado on top and season. Add your eggs.
Cysteine is an amino acid that breaks down toxins from alcohol intake. It reduces recovery time. The toast contains fiber and complex carbs to help blood sugar rebalancing. Avocado contains antioxidants, healthy fats, and a host of nutrients that shuttle out the nasty effects of alcohol. Also, avocado contains a lot of potassium. Alcohol depletes potassium and other nutrients. Adding a combination of vegetables in your breakfast ensures that you have a wide array of minerals and vitamins.
Conclusion
Remember, sugary foods exacerbate the hangover symptoms. Also, worth noting, caffeine dehydrates your body even more. (Though we know it feels impossible to abstain!). Simply take in extra water for every cup of coffee you drink. If you want to fight a hangover in rapid time, consider an IV therapy. IV therapy flushes out toxins, hydrates your body, and cleanses your system after a night of imbibing. But, take it from us, late nights and too much alcohol can really set back your weight loss goals. Read about how alcohol affects weight loss here.
