We get it! Not everyone has time to make every meal from scratch. Time is the number one obstacle we hear as to why people don’t start, or stick with their weight loss efforts. Losing weight is hard! Keeping it off feels impossible. Add to it a bunch of recipes that trap you in the kitchen for more time than you have, and well, the odds go down even more. Solutions exists (see below) but so do healthy packaged foods!
Often a diet trap, packaged foods historically contain inflammatory oils, gluten, sugar, corn syrup, MSG and more. These ingredients spike your blood sugar, increase insulin (your fat storage hormone) and often lead to cravings. But what if you just need a little help? Like, you’re willing to throw healthy things together with a little starter kit, but you just need to know how to differentiate the junk from the good. Allow our solutions and healthy packaged finds guide you…
#1. Follow a weight loss meal plan designed with your dollars, time and sanity in mind. Good meal plans should address your goals, but also be designed to reuse ingredients. Things like produce, or more expensive items, like a bag of almond flour, ideally get used several times. We offer dozens of meal plans within the 131 Method program. They take into account allergies, big families, nursing moms and more! Alternatively, come up with a meal prep routine that suits ya!
#2. Intermittent fast so you have less meals to prepare each day. Health benefits abound with IF! But you’ll also save time and money.
#3. Make some things from scratch, but rely on a few packaged items to bridge the gap. Check out our recent finds below that should be anti-inflammatory for most people…
Birch Benders Pancake Mixes– These mixes make breakfast time a breeze. Simply add water, heat, flip and voila! We like the clean ingredients in the paleo version, and recently stumbled on their new keto pancakes. With those two varieties, you’ll find a place for them no matter which phase of the 131 you’re in.
Swerve Cake Mix– Low carb and really simple, the vanilla and chocolate cake mixes come in handy for celebrations. With an almond flour base, you simply add eggs, oil, water and vanilla to make delicious cake recipes. Who says you can’t eat cake while watching your diet?! These comply with a keto diet.
Cauliflower Gnocchi– Trader Joe’s jumped on the scene last year with their incredible frozen cauliflower gnocchi that started quite a buying frenzy. Like many of their top products, bags of these were sold out in the beginning, especially as paleo bloggers began writing about it.
Quick hack regarding the cooking preparation…don’t boil them like the bag says or you end up with glop! Instead, defrost them a bit and pan fry in a splash of avocado oil until golden and crispy on all sides. Then top with your favorite sauce. While making these from scratch is a “thing”- we suggest this bagged version fo sho’!
Rao’s– Speaking of sauce…this all-natural find saves you tons of time (and quite frankly, even homemade doesn’t taste as good, which is seldom the case). We like buying off of Thrive Market to save $$.
Vegan Protein Bar– While it’s not hard to make your own from scratch (check out our version), sometimes it’s just too many ingredients to buy for one recipe. As a result, this boxed starter kit makes it really simple to create grab and go snacks.
Coconut Wraps– Need a vessel for your turkey, eggs or hummus? These low carb, sturdy wraps come in handy in every phase of the 131! Tortillas and bread contain all kinds of junky ingredients (gluten, corn, preservatives and more!). These little beauties come from coconut! Literally- just coconut! But don’t worry- they don’t taste like a coconut! We love their low carb macros!
Bread– Not your average bread, though! With grain-free ingredients, these loaves, buns and more turn out soft in the middle and lightly toasted on top. Because most low-carb bread stays very dense and flat, it’s seldom worth the effort! Just toss in water, apple cider vinegar and eggs to this healthy mix, and get ready for your house to smell like a French bakery!
Cauliflour Foods– With products galore (yep- pizza crusts, pastas, crackers and more), this up and coming brand has us hooked. Be sure to check the pizza ingredients to ensure you tolerate any cheese in the crusts, or opt for the plant-based versions that are nut-free, gluten-free and dairy-free.
While many of our 131 recipes are super simple to make, the realistic side of us knows that work, kids, traffic and LIFE prevent the best intentions. We give you permission to cut yourselves some slack and buy the occasional (healthy) packaged food item!
