Healthier Bacon Wrapped Brussels Sprouts

Home chefs and restaurants alike continue to up the Brussels sprouts game. At this rate of culinary creativity, our parents’ memories of boiled and boring sprouts will soon be forgotten forever. Cruciferous Brussels sprouts boast an array of nutritional benefits. Low in calories but high in many nutrients, especially fiber, vitamin K and vitamin C, they’re great for gut health, which we’re all about in the 131 Method. (Hint, hint…when you get your gut right, weight loss resistance dissipates).

Health Benefits

Brussels sprouts are especially high in kaempferol, an antioxidant studied extensively for its healing properties. Kaempferol may reduce cancer cell growth, ease inflammation, improve heart health and fight free radicals. We can’t think of a tastier way to get your antioxidants than this popular recipe. Just a couple ingredients and some toothpicks (because everything looks cuter on a stick) creates a “WOW” appetizer, or even a weeknight side-dish for the family.

What Makes Them “Healthier?”

Well, many recipes do not specify the type of bacon they should use in a recipe. We only stand behind a few kinds. (Our personal fave comes from Butcher Box). Look for nitrate-free, humanely raised bacon! Also, don’t burn your bacon and eat it. This produces carcinogens that are not healthy. We also don’t use extra fat or sweeteners in our recipe. Many Brussels recipes are fried, or contain lots of maple syrup, honey, or dates. Our recipes stays low in carbs.

Bacon Wrapped Brussel Sprouts

Serves: 40 servings, 1 Brussel Sprout
Cook time: 25 minutes
Print Recipe

Ingredients

  • 40 Brussels sprouts
  • 20 slices humanely raised bacon
  • Pinch zero-calorie sweetener (optional)*
  • Pinch cayenne pepper (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Remove hard stems from Brussels sprouts and any soft or discolored outer leaves.
  2. Slice each piece of bacon in half. Wrap each sprout with a ½ slice of bacon and place on a baking sheet with edges. You can secure with toothpicks, or not, as the bacon should wrap and hold.
  3. Bake for around 22-25 minutes or until bacon is cooked and Brussels sprouts are tender. (Time may vary based on the size of your sprouts).
  4. For a spicy kick, sprinkle with cayenne pepper after wrapping.

*For a sweet and spicy kick, sprinkle with a granulated sugar substitute, such as Lakanto brand Monk Fruit sweetener and cayenne before adding to oven.
